Below in the valley we coulddiscern the little white hermitage of La Aina, once theprison of a British subject, a Mr. Bonnell, who, capturedin 1870* near Gibraltar, was carried thither by seqnrstra-dores, and concealed in this remote spot till the stipulatedransom had been lodged by the Governor of Gibraltar inthe consulate at Cadiz : an incident which led to unj)leasantcorrespondence between the British and Spanish Govern-ments, and which was luckily closed by the tragic deathsof all the offenders.
