Nicholson. General Information ORIGIN AND PURPOSE OF THE COLLEGE. This College owes its origin to the Act of Congress ofJuly 2, 1862, entitled An Act donating public lands to theseveral States and Territories which may provide collegesfor the benefit of agriculture and mechanic arts. The Actcontemplates the endowment, support and maintenance ofat least one college, where the leading object will be, with-out excluding other scientific and classical studies, and in-cluding military tactics, to teach such branches of learning asare related to agriculture and the mechanic arts in suchmanner as the legislature of the States may respectivelyprescribe, in order to promote the liberal and practical edu-cation of the industrial classes. The fund having been received by the State, the interest ofit was placed under the control of the Trustees of the Uni-versity by which the North Georgia Agricultural Collegebecame a~ department of the University, the title of theabove property being conveyed
