Capillary haemangioma. A large capillary haemangioma (red) seen on the vulva, the external genitalia, of a child. Capillary haemangiomas are benign tumours of the capillary wall which cause a red patch of variable size and shape on the skin or mucous membranes. Haemangiomas may be congenital or may develop later in life. They do not usually require treatment. However, if they bleed persistently or if they are located in areas subject to repeated pressure, as in this case, a surgical removal may be necessary. The removal is carried out by using different techniques including laser treatment, cryosurgery, radio- therapy or plastic surgery.
