In a sense it is incorrect to speak of the two Tertiary lowlands as peneplains, for a relativelysmall portion of the whole region was reduced to base level. They are, strictly, local pene-plains, and the durations of the erosion cycles they represent were very short as compared withthe duration of the Jurassic-Cretaceous cycle.
