Botel Tobago is one of a number of names, depending on the language used, for a 45-km-square island of volcanic origin off the south-east coast of Formosa (Taiwan), of which it forms part in governmental terms. Today it is normally called by the Chinese name, Lan Yu. It is approximately 60 km due east of the southern point of Taiwan and is home to the Tao, an ethnic minority group who migrated to the island from the Batan archipelago 800 years ago. This remains one of the best preserved of Taiwanese indigenous communities. In this view the ship to the left is presumably Butt's 'Sylvia'. The viewpoint is possibly from the south-east of the island, but this in uncertain. Botel Tobago, off Formosa . June 1867.
