Late Pleistocene, Rancho La Brea, California, USA, Illustration
Illustration of what is now the La Brea tar pits in California, USA, during the late Pleistocene epoch (,000-11,700 years ago). In the foreground, prehistoric sabre-toothed cats (Smilodon sp.) can be seen feeding on a tapir (Tapirus sp.) carcass, as a pack of dire wolves (Aenocyon sp.) hunt bison (Bison sp.) in the background. Rancho La Brea is an area in California where bitumen has naturally seeped up from the ground over tens of thousands of years. The bitumen covers and preserves animal remains, and as such this area is still an active palaeontological site.
