He wasborn in Anoka County, Minnesota, on January 7, 1872,a son of Orrin and Hattie (Reed) Smith, and grand-son of Daniel Y. Smith. After meeting with somematerial prosperity in Maine, his native state, DanielY. Smith brought his family west to Minnesota, andbecame extensively interested in realty in and aboutAnoka, handling city and farm lands upon a largescale.
