Dick Frans Swaab (born 1944), Dutch neurobiologist, holding a model of a human brain. Swaab is director of the brain bank (Nederlandse Hersenbank) at the University of Amsterdam. This has thousands of brain samples, which are used for research into brain functions and brain disorders. Swaab's research includes studies of the impact of hormones and other factors on the development of the foetal brain during pregnancy, as well as studies of sexual dimorphism, sexual orientation, and depression. His works include 'We Are Our Brains: From the Womb to Alzheimer's' (2014). Photographed in 2013.
