Then the tube should be carried well down, and the movements ofthe diaphragm examined for limitations on either side, and the presenceof dulness at either base looked for. Next the heart and aorta are carefully scrutinised for abnormalities ofsize, shape, or position, or for the presence of pulsation in 282 KADIOGRAPHY The tube should then be moved over to the right side of the chest, andthe diaphragm of the apparatus closed laterally until a long slit aperture isobtained. This is carefully adjusted over the hilus of the lung for thedetection of enlarged or calcareous deposits in the glands. The appearanceof the shadows at the root of the lung should be noted. Repeat the obser-vation on the left side. Great care should be exercised in the examination of the apices of thelungs, both as regards the quantity of current passing through the tube and the observationof the apices them-selves. After oneapex has been ex-amined a mentalnote should be madeof the degree of theillumination present, and the tube thenpassed over to theother side. Differ-ences between thetwo apices should becarefully noted. The current pass-ing through the tubeshould be regulatedby the operator, andthis is best done byan adjustable rheo-stat close to his a soft tube anda s
