Surgeon-GeneralHammond, accompaniedbyBrigadier-GeneralMuir,deputy medical-inspector-general of the Britisharmy, visited the field, in-s[)ected the hospitals, andgave the sufferers the ben-efit of their professionalskill soon after the close ofthe long and terrific battle.
