Austin and W. H. Wharton he was appointed as a commissioner in December,1835, to visit the United States and enlist financial aid and sym-pathy from that quarter. He was a member of the First Con-gress of the Republic and was elected Speaker of the adjournedsession in 1837, and was for a time Secretary of War in Pres-ident Lamars Cabinet.
