Michel Dorigny, Design for a Wall Decoration, ca. 1650, pen and brown ink with watercolor on two sheets of paper, 14 13/16 in. x 16 15/16 in. ( cm. x 43 cm.), Michel Dorigny was a close collaborator and son-in-law of Simon Vouet (1590--1649), France's leading seventeenth-century painter who brought the Italian Baroque to Paris. Dorigny popularized Vouet's composition in over eighty engravings. The younger artist made a name for himself with several decorative designs for some of the most prestigious private residences in Paris. None of these interior decorations survive. Dorigny's many sumptuous drawings of wall designs, such as this sheet, are thus invaluable for the understanding of his contribution to the stylistic developments of Parisian interiors at a particularly fruitful moment. Dorigny often indicates various alternative proposals compressed into a discontinuous order. It is unclear whether this drawing was destined for a specific commission or was meant for publication in a pattern book. An early mount of this drawing bears the inscriptions 'Simon Vouet pinxt.' and 'Mich! Dorigny feci.'
