St Mary Somerset church in the City of London, baroque tower with pinnacles and obelisks perhaps by Nicholas Hawksmoor

St Mary Somerset, church in the City of London rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666 by Christopher Wren and perhaps Nicholas Hawksmoor between 1685 and 1704. Only the tower survives, the rest demolished for road-widening scheme in hte 1860s. The top stage is a composition of eight pinnacles set on panelled pedestals. The corner pedestals support fluted urns tapering outwards, while those in between, in the middle of each face, have taller obelisks tapering inwards. The contrast between the two sets of pinnacles, with their differing heights and alternately tapering profiles, makes for a very Baroque effect
