Boggsville was a small community started in 1862 just off the Santa Fe Trail. Settled along the confluence of the Arkansas and Purgatoire Rivers, it was not far from Bent's Old Fort. In fact the founder of Boggsville was William Bent's son-in-law, Thomas Boggs. Pictured here is Thomas Boggs' house, and it was here that Carson joined his friends to settle down as a farmer, toward the end of his life. Carson died in nearby Fort Lyon and was originally buried near his home in Boggsville. His remains were moved to Taos to be buried with his third wife, who had passed away a couple of months before him.
