The VLT comprises four mirror telescopes (Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun), housed in the buildings at centre. They provide images which are combined by interferometry. This gives an image equivalent to that obtained by a 16-metre diameter mirror, making the VLT one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. They are located at an altitude of 2600 metres in Chile's Atacama desert. At far left are the site's auxiliary telescopes. This photograph, from December 2016, is a still from webcam footage of the site.
