Washington, DC. 11-16-1988 L-R Congressman Jack Kemp, Doctor Edward Teller and Doctor Andrei Sakharov at the "Ethics and Public Policy Center" dinner at the Washington Hilton. Edward Teller was a Hungarian-born American theoretical physicist who, although he claimed he did not care for the title, is known colloquially as "the father of the hydrogen bomb". He made numerous contributions to nuclear and molecular physics, spectroscopy (in particular, the JahnÐTeller and RennerÐTeller effects) and surface physics. Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was a Russian nuclear physicist, Soviet dissident and human rights activist. He became renowned as the designer of the Soviet Union's Third Idea, a codename for Soviet development of thermonuclear weapons. Sakharov later became an advocate of civil liberties and civil reforms in the Soviet Union, for which he faced state persecution; these efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975. The Sakharov Prize, which is awarded annually by the European Parliament for people and organizations dedicated to human rights and freedoms, is named in his honour. Credit: Mark Reinstein
