(now Boston Highlands), Oct. i, received his early education at the Roxbury LatinSchool, and graduated at Har\ard College in the classof 1870. Assistant Secretary of State Wharton andLieutenant-Governor Wolcott were members of thesame class. During the year following graduation hewas tutor at St. Marks School, Southborough, Mass.,and in 1871 he was appointed assistant professor ofEnglish at the UnitedStates Naval Acad-emy at Annapolis,where, in 1873, hewas placed at thehead of the depart-ment of Englishstudies, history andlaw, his appointmentto both of theseplaices being the re-sult of competitiveexamination. In1876 he was com-missioned a profes-sor in the UnitedStates Navy with therelative rank of lieu-tenant this year he pub-lished the Historyof the Nav
