Fontainebleau, Porte Doree


The view taken in 1828, shows the Porte Doree which is ancient gateway of the the Palais de Fontainbleau leading to the Cour de la Fontaine, the Cour d’Honneur and the Cour Ovale. The palace is situated in a forest region outside Paris. Its main features are credited to Francis I and the architect Prematiccio. Additional features were added by Henry IV, Louis XIII, Louis XIV and Louis XV. It contains four palaces and five courts. Napoleon spent vast resources on maintaining the palace and erected the Gallery of Diana. Henry III was born in the palace. Pope Pius VII lived in the palace and Napoleon abdicated in the palace. The image was drawn by B Ferry under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by J Tingle
