Otthose who were there trained for the service of the chiu-ch,some continued in the houses to which they belonged, whileothers were sent abroad for the instruction of the early as the reign of Henry ii, the abbot and con\entof St. Edmunds Bmy maintained a school in their manor of Beccles. Theprecise character of this institution may be difficult to ascertain; but it existedthrough a considerable period. For it appears, from a deed dated 1st June1395, that the right of appointing the master was vested, by ancient custom, inthe chamberlain of the abbey; and the privilege was then exercised by him.
