He was appointed an ExtraordinaryLord of Session, i6th February 1539; and Keeperof the Privy Seal, 8th August 1546. He married,and by so doing greatly added to his estates, Janet,eldest daughter and co-heiress of Patrick, LordHalliburton of Dirleton, and had issue, Patrick,who succeeded his father; James of Forteviot,Henry and William. There is a charter to WilHam, Lord Ruthven,Janet HalHburton, his wife, and James, their son, ofhalf of the lands of Forteviot, 24th January 1536;and another to James, second son of WilHam, Lord 32. LADY MARIE RUTHVEX, WIFE OF VAN DYCK CHARTER OF SWAINE Ruthven, of the barony of Legge Kingston, 5thFebruary 1551. James died without issue, andPatricia, Lord Ruthven, was served heir to hisbrother, 9th January 1553. In addition to the abovefour brothers there were : Alexander Ruthven ofFreeland; Lilias, married to David, second LordDrummond; Catherine, married to Sir Colin Camp-bell of Glenorchy; Cecilia, married to DavidWemyss of Wemyss; Barbara, married to the sixthLord Grey; Janet, married to John Crichton ofStrathord; Margaret, married to James Johnston ofElphinston; Christian, married to William Lundinof Lundin. The Ruthven family had their full share ofcharters in early times, as is evident from theChartulary of Scone and from the Inchcolm Regis-ter.
