Most of the other rooms bear signs of having beenrecently occupied by persons under considerable obligations to the paper-hangers and carpenters of the town, who have sedulously concealed manyfeatures of the work of their predecessors. The state rooms are noble evenin their desolation; and the deep bay windows, carved chimney-pieces, andadorned panellings, of the Stuart period, are in excellent style. Bothapartments are adorned cornice-wise aloft, with painted and gilded com-partments, rich with the heraldry of the Gresleys, the Hydes, the Eyres, 80 WANDERINGS OF A PEN AND Fireplace, Tamworth Castle. &c. &c, in addition to the arms of the first stock of the nobility gifted withthe estate. One fireplace is surroundedwith sumptuous black oakencarving, highly polished. Thereis a series of mouldings, cor-nices, and brackets of the latersixteenth century ; and upon aspacious projecting tablet, ad-mirably supported by fantasticwork and human figures andCorinthian pillars, is a shield ofarms, Marmion quartered withthe succeeding generations. Theother fireplace is surmounted bypanellings, repeating a genealo-gical stem and its view from the rampart ofthe castle is a treat that wewould have enjoyed until the coming of the bat, but the grey warderleaned hard upon his lame leg, and looked piteously for our fee and ourspeedy exit, and we obliged him, considering our unseasonable postponementof his balmy slumber. Returning to our inn of the Fleur de Lys, we hasted well with thecleanly allowance provided, and listened
