WORLDS COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION. 79 By far the most pretentious of the structures erected by the several States ofthe Union stands the Illinois State Building, Being in a sense the host at theExposition, it was deemed not only proper but requisite that Illinois shouldmake such appropriation and provide such a building as would enable her toperform creditably the,duties of that office. The State appropriated $800,000and the building cost $250,000.
