Amaranthaceae (saxaul). Bayan Zag. Gurvansaikhan national park, Gobi desert, Mongolia
Bayan Zag is famous paleontological site within the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park. Many millions years ago (approximately 80 million), in the upper Cretacious formation, these basins used to be swamp populated by dinosaurs and old mammals and birds. During the last century there were found incredible number of well preserved fossils (full skeleton, bones, clutches of dinosaur’s eggs). The old Chinese-Mongolian dragon mythology is said to have its origin in the discovery of dinosaurs in Gobi.
