This wouldseem to me to have been the likely cause. The only report of a similar case I have seen was made inOctober last by Dr. T. H. Manley, of New York. He reportedthe sac in his case to contain the same viscera as mine. Heattempted operation, but found it impossible to do anything,and his child died in a few hours. I did not attempt anyoperation, seeing no chance I was told by one of the physicians present at the post-mortem that there had been cases reported in which the kid-neys were also eventrated. A deformity of this character constitutes a congenital mon-strosity, and is not to be compared, as Dr. Manley does, withthose more common minor varieties of embryonic hernia wherethere is some chance of relief by operation. He inserts a curved metal cathe-ter, having a lumen of 2 mm., up to the fundus uteri, and injects 3 or 4grammes of tincture of iodine. An ordinary tampon is put in the vagina toprotect it from the iodine after the instrument is withdrawn. Abortiontakes place on the third day, with the usual symptoms of menstruation.
