Hogarth's earlier series of painted works, "The Harlot's Progress" and "Marriage à-la-mode" which were subsequently released as engravings, "Industry and Idleness" was engraved from the outset. Hogarth's aim in this series was to illustrate the possible rewards for working hard, and the pitfalls of not doing so, a message predominantly aimed at working children. This reproduction was by Thomas Cook.

Thomas Cook (1744/5-1818) was a printmaker who produced works for The Gentlemen's Magazine and frontispieces for book is most well known for reproducing works by Hogarth, this being one of many.
