Comet 2012 S1 (ISON), photographed on 2 March 2013.

Comet 2012 S1 (ISON), photographed on 2 March 2013. The comet is the small object at the centre of the photo. At this time it was 688 million km from the Sun, and 600 million km from Earth. Even at this distance, which is just within the orbit of Jupiter, it has developed a tail. On November 28, the comet will pass just over 1 million km from the Sun's surface and may become a brilliant object visible in daylight. The photo was taken using a 20 minute total exposure using a 430 mm telescope. Credit Damian Peach/Galaxy
