A molecular model of liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist used to treat type 2 diabetes. In order to reduce hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) after a meal, liraglutide increases insulin secretion, delays gastric emptying and suppresses glucagon secretion. Liraglutide is also known to decrease appetite to help maintain body weight, lower blood triglyceride levels, as well as inhibit the death and stimulate the regeneration of beta cells in the pancreas. Atoms are colored dark gray (carbon), light gray (hydrogen), blue (nitrogen) and red (oxygen).
