N3 ^ PREFACE, 1 \v f I ^HE present part contains the Transactions of the Society\ -L during the years 1882 and 1883. The late Mr. ThomasNorth, , who was Honorary Secretary of the Society for Lupwards of twenty-three years, carefully edited the first five volumesof the Transactions, extending from the commencement of the^Societys existence to the close of the year 1881. After his\^ lamented death, which happened on the 27th February, 1884, Iwas appointed Editorial Secretary. It is only right to state thatMr. North left the papers which compose this present part, partlyready for the press, and the rest so carefully arranged, that theeditorial duties connected with its publication have not been of anarduous nature. 1400195 ll The Committee have decided that in future the Transactionsfor each year shall be published annually. The proceedings of theSociety for the year 1884 will therefore probably be in the handsof Members early
