Europe Italy Piedmont Turin Piazza Castello, The Royal palace Started in 1646 by Royal Lady Christine of France to replace the old palace of the Bishop, still retains the facade of Carlo Morello (1658). The building, a square with a courtyard, was the residence of the kings of Sardinia until 1859 and Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy, until 1865. In the nineteenth century restoration and modification are assigned to Ernesto Melano and Pelagio Palagi and inspired by ancient Egyptian culture. The Palagi built the great gate with the statues of Castor and Pollux, which closes the square in front of the Palace
