Onan upper floor of the well-known factory inTottenham Court Road (in which abouta hundred blind persons are employed) wema_\- see a party o{ workers busily engagedin the manufacture of bask-ets, an industry inwhich the blind are peculiarly successful. The work-room is a large square apart-ment, littered with various baskets of thelarger kind, some of them just finished, others specimens sent as patterns to becopied. The busy workmen are seated oa. 30 LIVING LOXDOX. sloping boards placed round tlic walls, eachwith his work before him, and the patternhe is cop\-ing by his side, and each work-ing awa_\- according to his skill. A sturd\-looking fellow in a dark corner—but lightand dark are alike to him—is making a tallclothes-basket, and as liis hands fly roundthe upright willows with a speed that thee)-e can scarcely follow we find it difficultto realise his infirmit)-. Not so in thecase of a sulky-looking pupil whu bungleshopelessly and complains loudly of histools, or in that of the elderl)- manwho is making a duplicate of a linenbasket, for although he works adroitlyenough we notice that he reads off themeasurements on his three-foot rule b)-passing his finger over the little studs b_\which the divisions aremarked. Basket - making may beconsidered the most satis-factor\- of the trades prac-tised by the blind, and thereiire here several rooms de-voted to it, one of whichis occupiedby women, who are, how-ever, muchless success
