Abnormal wisdom tooth. Coloured pan-oral X-ray of the mouth of a female, showing an impacted wisdom tooth (yellow) in the right lower jaw. It is growing crooked, impacting on the second molars lying beside them. If the tooth is not surgically removed, its further growth will seriously affect many teeth in the lower jaw. Adults have four wisdom teeth (known as third molars), one at the very back of each side of the upper and lower jaws. They erupt between the ages of 17 and 21. A pan-oral X-ray provides a panoramic view of all the teeth in the mouth. It is useful for finding unerupted or impacted teeth, cysts, jaw fractures, or tumours. The picture is recorded continuously on to film as the camera swings around from one side of the jaw to the other.
