The bodies of concentration camp prisoners killed by the SS lie outside of a barn near Gardelegen. Over 1000 prisoners being evacuated from forced labour camps were herded into the barn and it was set on fire. 1016 died and 7 survived. The action wascarried out by local units (Hitler Youth, Volkssturm and fire-fighters) under SS direction. The bodies are where they were placed by German civilian forced by the Army to clear the site.
