Amoebic colitis. Light micrograph of a section through a colon (part of the large intestine) with amoebic colitis, showing an ulcer (centre). Amoebic colitis is an inflammation and ulceration of the colon caused by the amoeba Entamoeba hystolytica (deep pink). The affected bowel lining becomes haemorrhagic, contributing to diarrhoea and the passing of blood and mucus.
