Vertical-axis wind turbine. Close-up of the top of a vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT). Wind turbines use the power of the wind to generate electricity. In this type of wind turbine, the axis of rotation is vertical to the ground, instead of horizontal. VAWTs can be used for small-scale applications, but often operate at a far lower efficiency than horizontal-axis wind turbines. Photographed in the Jardins d'Eole, Paris, France, a park designed with the latest environmentally friendly systems.
