Bucket orchid, Coryanthes speciosa, flower
Flower of a bucket orchid, Coryanthes speciosa. Orchids of the genus Coryanthes emit a pheromone that attracts male euglossine bees. The bees fall into the "bucket" of the orchid and pick up pollinia (pollen packets) in their effort to escape. On a visit to a second orchid, the bee will deposit the pollinia, thereby pollinating the second orchid. Greenhouse specimen.
