Minnie [Gunn] and ?Tilly [Jenkins] ? at our place to tea, and during the evening. 24. Tuesday. Reading. Wrote to Hannah. And as requested 25. Wednesday. Visit by an invitation from Henry Heylyn, went to Acre Lane this evening, to a musical party. Some dozen persons of either sex, performances on the organ, the piano forte, the latter being occasionally accompanied by flute and violincello. The music selected, was all classic, names of Handel, Mendelsohn, Beethoven &c, appearing in the written programme. Heylyn himself played finely on the organ, (which is an exceedingly handsome instrument, colored Owen Jones fashion,) but his friend, organist to a chapel in the neighbourhood excelled him. A Lady played also. A small boy seated in a chair pumped at the instrument for the benefit of the performers. None of the ladies were very young, caps predominating; the men were social and unaffected, and altogether the business was pleasurable. Mrs Heylyn told me that Edward [Heylyn] had recently had 150 [pounds] from her, and spoke of ?setting up in business in New York! Supper, and certain national tunes ended the entertainment at 12. I ?m inclined to like this brother of Heylyn ?s albeit he makes jerking nasal interjections.
