Salmonella bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a group of Salmonella sp. bacteria. Each cell is rod-shaped (blue/ green) and has long hair-like flagellae (yellow) used for motility. Salmonella bacteria are of the Enterobacteriaceae family. They are Gram- negative bacilli bacteria that inhabit the gut. Salmonella includes the species S. typhi and S. paratyphi, responsible for typhoid and paratyphoid fever in humans. Other serotypes cause gastroenteritis or food poisoning. Over 1800 different serotypes of Salmonella are known. Magnification: unknown.
