Light micrograph of a nerve cell (neuron) that has been prepared with the expansion microscopy (ExM) technique. This technique uses a polymer gel to expand structures that would not normally be visible under a light microscope. Here, neuronal processes have been labelled with an anti-beta-tubulin, which highlights part of the cytoskeleton. Different colours reflect the changing depths of the neuronal processes.
