Lake Karakul in Pamir Pamirs Tajikistan GBAO province

PAMIRS - Known in Persian as the «Bam-i-Dunya» («Roof of the World»), the Pamir mountains in Eastern Tajikistan form one of the most unexplored and isolated regions on Earth and are one of the highest mountain ranges in the world. High, cold and remote, the area was totally closed to foreigners during Soviet rule, until the early 1990’s, and is only now really opening up to adventurers and travelers from all over the world.
