Venereal disease, 16th-century allegorical illustration. This warning against venereal disease (sexually transmitted infections) is set in a landscape circle. At right, a figure plays the lute in front of a fountain with Venus and Cupid. At centre, a man gestures towards the fountain, while facing left towards a figure with a spear standing over a man crouching to drink from a stream into which a dog is urinating. The word 'venereal' derives from a Latin word related to Venus (the goddess of love). This illustration dates from the period 1580 to 1600, and is thought to be by Dutch artist Theodor de Bry (1528-1598), after Johannes Sadeler and Christoph Schwarz.
