Our rival, the rascal : a faithful portrayal of the conflict between the criminals of this age and the defenders of society, the police . r plunder wasreported. Among the recruits of this gang was James E,Lyons, a young man of a good family, who had found employ-ment in the hotel but had been persuaded to enlist in this com-pany of thieves. In some way the gang learned that a man was going totake the train from New York to New Haven, who wouldcarry with him a bag containing thirty thousand dollars inUnited States government bonds. So Jesse Allen, one ofthe brothers of The Allen, and the young recruit, JimmyLyons, took the same train which carried away the man withthe bag of bonds, with the design of stealing the bag beforereaching New Haven. They did pick up a valise on the way^but, through a mistake on their part, it was not the bag ofbonds but a similar bag filled with underclothing of littlevalue. This was so disgusting that they went to the town ofGranby, Conn., at once, and broke into a store, in the night,in order to get some plunder which they could show withouta blush to their gang in New York. They succeeded in.
