It may per-haps be characterized as hav-ing the involucral leaves free,the iiuier involucre tubularand more or less angular, andthe mouth laciniate. It com-prises small creeping andbranching herbs of dampplaces. About a dozen fossilspecies of this genus areknown, found, for the mostpart, beautifully preserved inthe amIjL-r of North Prussia.
