ART TREASURES The interior, which was cruciform, was 455 feet longand 99 feet wide; the distance from the middle isle to thehighest point in the roof was 125 feet. Here in nichesin the walls was another multitude of statues, and inthe nave and transepts were preserved valuable 171. The Christian World! Here also hung atreasure of paintings, including canvases by Tintoretto,Nicolas Poussin, and others, and some fine old tap-estries. In the treasury were reliquaries, one said to con-tain a thorn from the Holy Crown, the skull of and a collection of valuable vessels in gold, themost remarkable in France. The treasures includednot only the coronation ornaments of various kings,but the vase of St. Ursula, the massive chalice ofSt. Remigius, and countless crucifixes in gold, silverand precious woods. In the treasury was also preserved the SainteAmpoule—the vessel in which the oil used to anointthe kings of France was preserved—a successor to thefamous ampulla, which a dove was said to have broughtfrom heaven filled with inexhaustible holy oil at thetime of the
