Tlio (listurl)infj influence of war-mak- iny and the continued upward spiral of food prices seem to have caused a re- duced sale of flowers and plants. There is an abundant supply of stock, with the result that prices are most reasonable at tlie ]>resent time. The activity in seeds, of course, is <jreat, especially in vejjetable seeds, and in some instances higher prices i)revail. Florists in the vicinity of the cemeteries are busily en- gaged with outdojor work, setting out pansies and jirejj'Jiring tlie graves for the bedding jdants. Cold, wet weather has iin})eded cemetery work, as well as tlie field jilautings of the growers. Tliere is a brisk movement of potted roses, and hardy rose stock for trans- planting experiences a large sale. Pansies are more than plentiful, but some of tlie bulbous stock is vanishing and giving more room to what remains. Irises are more conspicuous by reason of their larger numl)i-rs and sweet peas liaA'e leached their prime. It would have been better if carnations, which now are of good quality and in large supply, had been held back for a more (ijiportune time. Various Notes. Business has been satisfactory, accord- ing to Henry Hornecker, of East Orange, but the miserable weatlier has blocked outdooi' work. A nearl)y ceiiictery lias provided Ernest Kadany with many orders for bedding plants and other stock. Tlie weak tone in general business lias been offset by funeral and outdoor work, says Frederick A. Kueliii. That war-time conditions have in- stilled a greater respect for pocket- books and thereby liave brqught about less free sjKiiding, are tlie reasons given by jMcLaughlin (.V: ^furjdiy for the present slowing up of business.
