In the operationof the valve the air flowsthrough ports in a man-ner quite similar to thatof the^G-6 brake this reason, the flowof air through the H-6 brake valve, with the handle in its differentpositions, will not be traced. Release and Charging Position. The purpose of this positionis to provide a large and direct passage from the main reservoirto the brake pipe, to permit a rapid flow of air into the latter (1)to charge the train brake system; (2) to quickly release and re-charge. If the handle is allowed to remain in this position, the brake system would be charged to main-reservoir avoid this, the handle must be moved to running or holdingposition. To prevent the engineer from forgetting this, a small portdischarges feed-valve-pipe air to the atmosphere in release position. Running Position. This is the proper position of the brake-valve handle (1) when the brakes are charged and ready for use;(2) when the brakes are not being operated; and (3) to releasethe locomotive brakes. This position affords a large direct passagefrom the feed-valve pipe to the brake pipe, so that the latter willcharge up to the pressur
