Jocelyn Bell Burnell (born 1943), British astrophysicist. As a research student at Cambridge University, Jocelyn Bell discovered the radio signals from the first pulsar in 1967. Her awards and honours include the Herschel Medal (1989), being elected Fellow of the Royal Society (2003), and being made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2007). Bell Burnell is a Visiting Professor in Astrophysics at the University of Oxford. She was President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2002 to 2004, and President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 2014.
