An old engraving of a lever press being used to collect oil. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This ‘Herbert oil press’ uses a jaw where the olives, fruit or seeds are inserted (right). Weights are placed at the other end – or, as here, the weight of the operator is harnessed. Not a difficult job as the man here is reading a book. The weight applied forces oil out which is collected in a vessel. A lever is a simple machine consisting of a beam or rigid rod pivoted at a fixed hinge, or fulcrum. A lever can amplify the input force to provide greater 'leverage'.

It trades off force against movement.
