The Ruins of the Palace of Phaistos on the South Coast of Crete
The Ruins of the Palace of Phaistos on the southern coast of Crete. Crete is in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. This is where the famous Phaistos Disc was found though its purpose is still a mystery. Now a holiday island once it was the ruler of the Seas. The Minoan civilisation was wiped out by the explosion of the volcano on the island of Santorini in 1460 BC. This gave rise to the legend of Atlantis. The Minoans worshipped the Minotaur, part Bull part man, and the Greek hero Theseus killed the Minotaur with help from Ariadne. Minoan pottery and jewellery was highly sophisticated and their capital was Knossos where a beautiful palace has been discovered. The treasures are in the museum at Heraklion. They had 2 languages only one of which has been deciphered, the other remains a mystery.
