Statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe at mission San Juan Capistrano founded in 1731 near San Antonio Texas
Franciscans and Spanish representatives established the first mission in 1718 in the San Antonio area. Five more were built within 13 years, all situate along the San Antonio River. The goal of the missions was to christianize the native population and make them Spanish citizens, as well as to be outposts of the Spanish civilization.
