The Rancia Castle near Tolentino, province of Macerata.

The Rancia Castle owes its name to a transformation of the French word grange or barn, storage of grain. In fact, the imposing fortress, built by Rudolf II da Varano, was built on a pre-existing building made by the Cistercian monks of the nearby Abbey of Fiastra for the storage of grain. The building of the castle took place between 1353 and 1357. The project was planned by Andrea Beltrami from Como. The building comes with a belt with a square embattled defense piombante, surrounded by a moat which was built on a stone bridge. In 1975 it was acquired by the City of Toledo and after a long and complex restoration was reopened to the public. Today it houses the Museo Civico Archeologico "Aristide Gentiloni Silverj" preserving important discoveries of Roman origin and Piceno. red
